The mission of the American Cancer Society is to improve the lives of people with cancer and their families through advocacy, research, and patient support, to ensure everyone has an opportunity to prevent, detect, treat, and survive cancer.
The American Cancer Society offers different programs to make life easier for cancer patients. Delmar got assistance from the American Cancer Society's Hope Lodge which gave him a free place to stay for 100 days while he traveled to receive treatment. Not only did he have a comfortable place to stay, he also found community to get him through his treatment. “Coming to the Hope Lodge, I knew I was in the right place,” he said.
Currently there are more than 30 Hope Lodge locations in the US and Puerto Rico. Each Hope Lodge offers cancer patients and their caregivers a free place to stay when their best hope for effective treatment may be in another city. Not having to worry about where to stay or how to pay for lodging allows guests to focus on getting better. Hope Lodge provides a nurturing, home-like environment where guests can retreat to private rooms or connect with others. Every Hope Lodge also offers a variety of resources and information about cancer and how best to fight the disease.
What does it take to outsmart cancer? Research. We’ve invested more than $5 billion in cancer research since 1946, all to find more – and better – treatments, uncover factors that may cause cancer, and improve cancer patients’ quality of life. We support the full realm of cancer research from basic science in the lab to translation of evidenced-based practices in cancer clinics. Some of the work we're best known for includes in-depth surveillance statistics, large studies with adults to learn about cancer prevention, and grants to support cancer researchers across the United States.
Whether it’s the middle of the afternoon or the middle of the night, our cancer information specialists are here to help. Have questions about treatment options or potential side effects? We have you covered. Need a ride to chemo or a place to stay when treatment is far away? We can help. Even if you just need a friendly ear, we’re here to help and can assist in more than 200 languages (via a language line) – 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Cancer isn't just a medical issue. It's a public policy issue. That's why the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN), the American Cancer Society's nonprofit, nonpartisan advocacy affiliate, engages with elected and appointed officials, policymakers, and candidates to ensure that cancer remains a top local, state, and national priority. ACS CAN's advocacy work is helping the American Cancer Society lead the fight for a world without cancer.

At Relay For Life events, no one faces cancer alone. We come together every year at more than 2,500 Relay events around the country to support and celebrate survivors and caregivers.
This Relay has special events and activities just for survivors and their caregivers, so they can connect with others and know there is a strong support system available to them.

In September 2022, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) will host its 12th annual Lights of Hope event.
Lights of Hope is a national event focusing on honoring loved ones who have survived cancer and remembering those we’ve lost. The luminaria displays in communities from coast to coast and in our nation's capital will send a clear and impactful message to lawmakers that fighting cancer must be a national priority – from increasing funding for lifesaving cancer research to ensuring that all Americans in all communities have access to quality, affordable cancer care.
Join us at our event and start your own fundraiser to advance evidence-based solutions that reduce death and suffering from cancer.
