MashUp Contemporary Dance Company is dedicated to the movement of female bodies and feminist ideas. Prioritizing innovation, collaboration, and inclusion, MashUp uplifts female-identifying artists and builds community through contemporary dance.
Each year MashUp honors two Exemplary Women in our LA Dance industry working in commercial, concert, and/or non-profit sectors. This year our LA Community nominated Boróka Nagy and Vanessa Hernández Cruz!
Through three days of performances, classes, and a film festival held at venues throughout Los Angeles and online, MashUp’s annual International Women’s Day Dance Festival (IWDDF) celebrates women’s achievements in dance and the arts and envisions a more equitable future. Purposefully aligned with the global International Women’s Day campaign theme, the festival provides a rare opportunity for 20-30 female-identifying and nonbinary dance professionals a chance to present and discuss their work; facilitates thoughtful, timely dialogue on gender issues; connects young artists with female artistic leaders; and inspires broad action towards greater gender equality
Historically for this National Holiday MashUp had joined forces with female-identifying creative teams, ideological partners, and/or social justice organizations for a public performance or event. Now merged with MashUp’s annual residency program, this event empowers a female-identifying, nonbinary, and/or trans choreographer to deepen their artistic practice, and includes a stipend, studio time with MashUp company dancers, a fully produced culminating work-in-progress performance, and professional documentation. An investment in the future of the dance field, this program is for early/mid-career artists who are historically not provided resources at this scale.
Launched in 2022, these quarterly events provide LA-based choreographers a platform to showcase work and solicit feedback, without the heavy price tag of producing their own showcase or renting space, while inviting audience members to experience a diverse array of artistry and an intimate glimpse of artistic process. Each evening allows 8 choreographers, first-to-sign-up, to present a work or excerpt 10 minutes or under, with the option to include an introduction and short post-Q&A. MashUp also provides concessions & refreshments to further encourage discussion, networking, and community-building amongst choreographers, dancers, and audience members.
We’re a small team with big goals, and helping hands are always welcome to help us fundraise, plan or staff events, and more.
