Neighborhood Forest is a non-profit, social venture dedicated to giving children their very own tree to plant on Earth Day – for free – every spring.
We love trees! We love planting them and watching them grow.
We want to give every child this joy.
And, in the process, beautify our neighborhoods, remove carbon from the atmosphere, and help instill in the hearts of our little ones a sense of magic, wonder, and love for our planet.
Since 2010, Neighborhood Forest has mobilized over 5,000 schools, libraries, and youth groups, engaged over 750,000 volunteers, and given over 310,000 children in all 50 states (plus Canada and Mexico) the opportunity to plant their very own tree.
We are growing at a rapid rate and are aiming to reach 1 million children in the next few years.
Our dream is to reach every child in North America and eventually the world.
I planted this silver maple tree in college when it was 6 inches tall. This is me and my tree 27 years later!
This experience inspired me to start Neighborhood Forest.
We want to give every child this joy.

Our original and flagship program is our annual Earth Day Free Tree giveaway ~ now 17 years and running:
1) Schools, libraries, and youth groups enroll for free
2) Parents sign-up for free trees through their local school, library, or youth group from January - March 15
3) Trees are delivered and distributed just ahead of Earth Day (April 22)
For kids that do not have a yard to plant a tree, we offer free indoor succulent plants every Fall. We also partner with companies to build succulent kits year-round to deliver to local school children.
Our Mini Food Forest program introduces children to permaculture through hands-on-learning. Kids learn how to care for a mini food forest ~ a self-sustaining, multi-layered ecosystem made up of edible plants. Through this experience, children discover how plants work together to attract pollinators, improve soil health, and provide food, while experiencing the joy and wonder of growing their own.
Our Permaculture Food Forest Program helps kids connect with nature and learn the basics of permaculture. Through hands-on learning and planting (on school grounds), children discover the simple, sustainable ways to care for the environment and their communities, gaining skills to make a positive difference for the planet.
Bring team members together for a 1-2 hour fun-filled volunteer experience to build 100-200 succulent kits for local school children.
