Nyathak Chuol never trained as an engineer. When her husband, who used to maintain the water system at Pinyudo refugee camp in Ethiopia, had to return to South Sudan, she was left to raise their children alone, with no formal education in mechanics and a community depending on her.
So she taught herself. Watching, learning, and fixing pipes by hand, Nyathak now keeps the camp's solar-powered water point running for over 51,000 people. When something breaks, the community comes to find her. She opens the tap every morning at 10am and stays on call late into the evening.
Her dedication has earned her a nickname across the camp, "Mama Pipeline," a name she loved so much she gave it to her own son.
Nyathak's story is one of thousands like it. Across Ethiopia, Oxfam works with refugees and host communities to build the skills and infrastructure that keep clean water flowing, even as funding for these systems grows more uncertain every year.
Programs
Women's Rights Fund
Launched in late 2020, the Women's Rights Fund provides 3 year flexible funding to small community organisations so they can invest in their own priorities. It is currently in Kenya, occupied Palestinian territory, Lebanon and Nepal. It supports tens of thousands of people each year.
Women's Rights Fund partners work on a range of issues such as emergency aid, access to healthcare, agriculture, support to survivors of violence and women’s political participation.
Water for All
Water for All provides clean water, sanitation and hygiene to communities hit by disasters and conflict — building wells and water tanks, distributing hygiene kits, and training communities to manage new water systems themselves.
Currently, Oxfam's SkyHydrant water treatment kit can produce 1,200 litres of clean water an hour from a borehole, which is enough for around 500 people a day
