Greater Nashua Habitat for Humanity has been providing safe, decent and affordable housing in the southern New Hampshire area since 1994. We are a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that works to strengthen families and communities through affordable homeownership opportunities.
In 1994, a small group of dedicated volunteers decided that the Greater Nashua area needed Habitat for Humanity. Officially established as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit on November 9, 1994, these dedicated volunteers looked around and saw that many families were struggling to find affordable housing. Determined to help meet the need, these committed volunteers knew that the services of Habitat for Humanity would benefit local families by building safe, decent, affordable housing to help break the cycle of poverty and provide a stable home for years to come. In the very beginning, the affiliate was able to provide a small number of critical home repairs and community improvement projects with limited funding and a modest group of volunteers.
The first Habitat for Humanity home was built 30 years ago in 1994, by partnering with Monadnock Habitat For Humanity to complete a home in Amherst, NH. In 1997, GNHFH became owners of their first property, a duplex, in the French Hill Neighborhood. that provided decent housing for two deserving families. This project, along with ongoing critical home repairs, started the momentum that has made GNHFH an integral part of the Greater Nashua Area.
Habitat for Humanity builds decent, simple and affordable houses for qualifying low to moderate income families who wouldn’t qualify for commercial mortgages. Successful applicants purchase their Habitat home with 0% interest mortgage provided by Nashua Habitat with monthly payments capped at 30% of the families’ monthly income. Each mortgage payment in turn funds future homes. The future homeowner volunteers 350 of sweat equity hours include building their home and other activities; also provides a small down payment; and attends financial budgeting classes.
Our Critical Home Repair program provides home repairs to low to moderate income homeowners who are struggling to maintain their homes due to age, disability or family circumstances.
The program focuses on health, life and safety code issues. It allows us to partner with families to help them reclaim their homes with pride, dignity, and in safety without being disrupted by the uncertainty, trauma and expense of moving.
All volunteers, from all walks of life most of our build crew volunteers have been with Nashua Habitat for decades. Though many more have joined us with our last home build in Nashua, NH.
Local businesses and volunteers gather for a day to build children's playhouses to raise funds for our home builds. Each team plans a theme and builds the playhouse then paints and decorates it in one day!
