United Way Coastal and Western Connecticut (UWCWC) envisions a community where every person is healthy, safe, and economically secure. We work in partnership with community to address critical needs and advance equitable pathways to wellbeing and financial security for everyone. UWCWC serves 27 communities across Fairfield and Southern Litchfield Counties. Since 2014, United Way of Coastal and Western Connecticut has focused on improving the health, education, and economic mobility of ALICE® (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) households, which make up 42% of the population in Fairfield and Southern Litchfield Counties.

Haley, a young single mother and survivor of domestic violence, found herself in temporary housing with her three-year-old son, Joshua. Determined to rebuild her life, she worked towards completing her GED while searching for employment. However, living in an area with limited public transportation made it nearly impossible to find affordable child care. Thanks to critical needs funding, Haley was able to purchase a vehicle and enroll Joshua in childcare, giving her the support she needed to pursue her education and secure a job.

Your contribution is essential in building a strong support system for ALICE households. By providing immediate assistance, funding local nonprofits, advancing policy changes, and supporting cradle-to-career programs, you help create a safety net that lifts up families and fosters a more equitable community.

Cora's Kids Family Child Care Network

Since 2018, United Way of Coastal and Western Connecticut has led a transformative effort in Danbury and New Milford through Cora’s Kids Family Child Care Network. In Connecticut, 71% of children under five live in households where all parents work, yet only 35% of infant and toddler care demand is met. Cora’s Kids has addressed this gap by creating 900+ licensed early care slots, supporting 150 family child care providers, and serving 1,000+ children from low- to moderate-income households. It equips providers with tools and training, helping families access safe, enriching care. Through its Community Messenger Program, 170+ residents have been trained to educate families and advocate for licensed care. In 2024, the Seedlings to Sprouts initiative launched, bringing fresh produce and nutrition education to families via home gardens—supporting food security and healthy habits for children.
