Meet Brinley! ♥️
Brinley is a 14-year-old girl with a truly inspiring story! Brinley had a life saving amputation in May 2021 due to an infection that developed in her lower left leg after being cleated in her shin during a soccer tournament. Brinley is now an above the knee amputee.
Brinley's mom shared the following story about Brinley that has us in tears! You are a superhero, Brinley!
"Brinley has always had a love for sports and is naturally competitive. She played soccer and was a catcher for her competitive softball team. She also loved playing basketball. After her amputation, Brinley's motivation was to get on the softball field again and continue to pursue her dream of playing college softball. In order to do that, she had to learn to walk and run again. She received her first walking leg in August 2021. Once she was ready to start running, we were told she would need a special prosthetic for running. However, unfortunately, insurance does not cover equipment outside of basic needs. That was when we were put in contact with Variety KC. In January 2022, Variety KC was able to cover the entire cost of Brinley’s running leg! Brinley worked hard to learn to run again and she made her way back onto the softball field. Brinley has since worked her way back to being starting catcher and this summer Brinley got her first home run! This summer, she competed at the Endeavor Games in track and field and powerlifting. This all has been made possible with the help of Variety KC & we will be forever grateful!
However, as Brinley grows & her limb changes in size and volume, it causes her socket (holds her prosthetic on her limb) to not fit properly. This causes sores and pain to her limb and does not allow her to function as she normally would. We are reaching out for help to cover the cost of the new socket she is needing. We would be so grateful for any additional help Variety KC could offer!”
Variety’s Medical Equipment program provides funding for a wide range of vital tools to children with disabilities. These pieces of medically prescribed equipment can have a life changing impact and are all designed to improve the child’s ability to access and engage with his or her environment through improved mobility, expression and more. Variety KC ensures that children who need this equipment receive it, regardless of their ability to pay.
Variety KC’s My Voice Program covers communication and assistive technology devices that have been
denied or are not covered by insurance. Examples include, but are not limited to,iPads, as well as
dedicated communication devices such as augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). If you do
not see the specific item your doctor or therapist has requested, applicants are still encouraged to apply
and Variety KC will review and determine approval.
Therapy is often a critical part of the journey for children with disabilities and their families. Individualized therapy services allow for children to improve skills, strengthen abilities, and increase their level of independence.
Variety KC is passionate about providing access to therapy services at the setting that best meets your child’s needs and allows them an individualized therapy team to support their goals. We are aware that insurance does not always provide adequate coverage for the therapy services and individualized service plan for every child. We hope that with our My Therapy program, Variety KC kids and families will be given the opportunity to expand what they thought to be possible.
Overall, My Therapy focuses on the “ability” rather than the “disability,” making it possible for each child to more fully participate in his or her world.
Fix the world to work for everyone
Being a part of a community, and being able to take advantage of what your community has to offer is something many people take for granted. However, the reality is that most community parks, playgrounds, ball fields and events don’t take kids with disabilities into consideration when they are designed. This results in limited opportunities for kids with disabilities and their families to meet their neighbors, make new friends, form strong relationships and participate in life.
That’s why Variety KC has made it part of our mission to fix the world around us so it works for everyone regardless of their physical or cognitive disability. Through adaptive playgrounds, swimming pools, ball-fields and communication boards kids and their families can now be active, be social and feel a sense of belonging in communities across the KC metro.
