Generation Hope

Social Butterfly

Generation Hope surrounds motivated teen parents and their children with the mentors, emotional support, and financial resources that they need to thrive in college and kindergarten, thereby driving a two-generation solution to poverty.

“When I learned about Generation Hope, I was shocked to find an organization where I truly fit in. With their support, I carry a newfound sense of empowerment. This passion for learning is having a positive effect on my boys. Their teachers have told me how highly they speak of me and that makes me proud. It reminds me how important it is to be a role model for them. Not only have I been able to survive—I have thrived because of my work ethic and the support of my Generation Hope family. I have made the Dean’s List every semester and I achieved this while being full-time parent, working and volunteering. I have regained my confidence. Initially as a single mother, I felt defeated. But with each obstacle I overcame, I realized that I am strong, resilient, and most importantly, worthy of self-respect. Having just completed my Junior year in nursing at George Mason University, I am so thankful for Generation Hope. My boys and I have created long-lasting friends through this program. I have seen the cohort of scholars struggle with obstacles but still succeed. Some are trying to manage being a single parent. Some are navigating relationship issues. Others are struggling with mental health. Each scholar has their own story and struggles, but we all wake up every day – going to work and school – because we see a better future for ourselves and our children.”

Fewer than 2% of teen moms nationwide earn a college degree before they are 30. Despite the fact that our Scholars face the challenges of affording childcare, working a full or part-time job, and parenting, our Scholars’ graduation rate exceeds the national average for all college students, regardless of income or whether or not they have a child. Furthermore, our Scholars’ graduation rate is almost double the graduation rate of low-income college students and almost eight times the graduation rate of single mothers nationwide.

Scholar Program

Generation Hope’s Scholar Program helps teen parents earn college degrees and secure thriving futures for their families. The programs includes: 1) matching each scholar with a caring mentor who supports them through their entire college career; 2) providing ongoing in-depth case management; 3) identifying needed support services and making connections for Scholars related to school, mental and physical health, financial aid, parenting, housing, domestic violence, and more; 4) offering in-depth, year-round career readiness programming; 5) providing in-house mental health services, including counseling and trainings, and making referrals to vital resources; 6) hosting the annual Hope Conference, Career Clinic, and other trainings, workshops, and social events; 7) providing up to $2,400 per year in tuition support and identifying other scholarship opportunities for Scholars; 8) offering an emergency fund that assists Scholars through crisis situations, such as homelessness or food insecurity, that could otherwise derail their college dreams. We also provide tutoring in any subject and child care at all Generation Hope events.

Next Generation Academy

Next Generation Academy provides the children of our Scholars up to age 5 with: 1) monthly home visiting/case management to address their individual needs using the evidence-based Parents as Teachers Curriculum; 2) developmental, literacy, and social-emotional screenings and interventions; 3) mental health support and parenting support; 4) access to high-quality early childcare; and 5) matching with families in the community that will provide resources and connections to assist with family needs. At each monthly home visit, we give the child an age-appropriate, culturally-relevant book for them to keep, and we create ongoing reading challenges to encourage regular family reading.
