Tubman helps people of all ages, genders, and cultural backgrounds who have experienced relationship violence, sexual exploitation, homelessness, mental and chemical health challenges, and other trauma.
Tubman's mission is to advance opportunities for change so that every person can experience safety, hope, and healing.
Victoria was first connected to Tubman services when law enforcement called our intervention line to report that Victoria was assaulted by her husband. Through initial safety planning, she shared that she did not feel safe staying in her home, and she came to Tubman’s shelter until a Domestic Abuse No Contact Order (DANCO) was issued in the criminal case, and she felt she could safety return to her residence.
What began as one criminal case soon became four when the abuser disregarded the order and was charged with three violations of her DANCO. In working with her legal advocate, Victoria decided to seek an Order for Protection (OFP) to provide additional safety for herself and her children. She and her legal advocate drafted the Order for Protection paperwork, and Victoria requested child support and custody of her two children. During the OFP hearings, she was represented by a Tubman staff attorney and was able to secure the requested relief. She also participated in a Tubman Law Clinic to get further legal support on family law issues. Throughout her time as a Tubman client, Victoria participated in our Holiday Gift Program and Tubman’s grocery gift card program for food support for her family.
Victoria has been a client for over two years and accessed seven different Tubman programs. She has expressed deep gratitude for Tubman’s support during this difficult journey and allowed us to share her story in the hopes of helping others struggling with abuse to see that resources are available to help.
