We Can Ride is a Premier Accredited Equine Assisted Activities and Therapy Center with PATH International (Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International).
We Can Ride operates with the talents of a volunteer Board of Directors, expert staff, credentialed physical and occupational therapists, PATH-certified instructors, dedicated volunteers & specially trained horses and ponies.
“Sophie is 23 and she has been riding with We Can Ride 20 years… I had learned about therapeutic horseback riding and the gait pattern is very similar to a person, we needed to give her that movement and motion to help her start to walk – which she did. Then we got a new diagnosis for her and she is losing her ability to walk. Now we are here because we need her to have movement, and we need her to have strength, and we need her to have ways to actually do things because she cannot take any steps by herself.
You think you’re just giving money, but it has nothing to do with that. You are giving people experiences that they would never ever otherwise have. And you are opening the world to people that… they don’t get that opportunity. And so you’re making their world bigger. And some of these people’s worlds are so small…. And you are doing something so amazing. My daughter has been on a journey with these horses for 20 years and she will stay around these horses until the day she dies … because it is life-changing.”
Therapeutic Riding lessons help individuals with disabilities improve their physical, emotional and social well-being through mounted and unmounted equine activities. The goal of Therapeutic Riding is to help each client reach their highest level of independence. Through a variety of special activities, clients benefit on several levels — including emotional and physical health, increased knowledge and understanding of horses and horsemanship skills, and the lasting effects of those rewarding experiences.
We Can Ride’s Hippotherapy program involves a credentialed speech or occupational therapist working individually with the client to reach traditional therapy goals without teaching specific riding skills. The therapist works with a PATH Intl. Certified Therapeutic Riding instructor to create the type of movements from the horse to meet the specific treatment goals. Trained volunteers also help with balance and postural corrections.
