Lake Agassiz Habitat for Humanity

Established

Lake Agassiz Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit organization dedicated to building strength, stability, and self-reliance through affordable homeownership in our local communities. In partnership with families, volunteers, and supporters, we help create safe, decent homes that provide a foundation for a better future.

We believe everyone deserves a place to call home. Through volunteer labor, donated materials, and generous community support, Lake Agassiz Habitat for Humanity offers families the opportunity to build and purchase their own homes with affordable mortgage options—empowering them to invest in their futures and contribute to thriving neighborhoods.

For over three decades, our work has gone beyond construction. We foster partnerships, support financial education, and strengthen communities by bringing people together around the shared goal of safe and stable housing. Together, we are building homes, hope, and a stronger Fargo-Moorhead region.

Hi! I’m Amber, and thanks to Lake Agassiz Habitat for Humanity, I will soon be a homeowner.

My journey hasn’t been an easy one. I married my husband Rodney in 2011, and together we dreamed of raising our family in a safe, loving home. Over the years, we experienced both deep joy and heartbreaking loss, including the loss of a baby late in pregnancy. In 2014, we welcomed another son—but just days later, my husband suffered a massive heart attack that left him unable to work.

As our family adjusted to life on one income, I worked multiple jobs and did everything I could to keep us afloat. In 2017, tragedy struck again when my husband suddenly passed away, leaving me to raise our three boys on my own. Our world was turned upside down. We lost our home, faced eviction, and had to start over in a small apartment while I worked to rebuild our lives.

Over time, with the support of family, therapy, and sheer determination, I found my footing again. I became a CNA and now work at Hospice nurse—a job that has deeply shaped my compassion and perspective. My boys have grown into strong, unique young men, and they are my greatest motivation.

Still, stable housing has remained out of reach. We currently live in a run-down, overcrowded apartment in an unsafe neighborhood. I’ve turned my living room into a bedroom so my kids can have space, but it’s not the home they deserve.

Being accepted into the Habitat for Humanity program means everything to us. It means stability, safety, and a place my boys can truly call home. This house represents more than walls and a roof—it represents healing, hope, and a future built on hard work and community.

We are incredibly grateful to be one of the families building a Habitat home this summer. I’m proud to put in the work, pay a mortgage, and create a safe place where my kids can grow and thrive.

Thank you for being part of our story—and for helping make our dream of homeownership come true
