Communities In Schools Of Wake County

Established

Communities In Schools Of Wake County surrounds students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. We believe that strong, positive relationships-not programs-change the trajectory of vulnerable students. CIS Wake amplifies the power of each students' potential by connecting them to caring adults and community resources designed to help them succeed. We're by their side every day, supporting them in ways that go beyond the classroom. We do whatever it takes to ensure that all kids, regardless of the challenges they may face, have what they need to realize their potential.

QUINTIN

Everyday after school you could find Quintin in a Communities In Schools of Wake learning center. Even as a high school junior, he found himself coming to the learning center to get help from certified teachers as he worked on projects, wrote papers and studies for tests. Quintin was proud of the fact that he’s been on the A/B honor roll for several semesters.

However, that’s not how it’s always been. Before engaging with CIS Wake he admits he was frustrated in class and that frustration manifested itself as anger. He explains that in a classroom setting, sometimes teachers did not have enough time to help him individually because they were working with so many students. That’s where Communities In Schools of Wake intervened. Once he started coming to the after school program he found one-on-one support from caring teachers and adult volunteer mentors and tutors who gave him the extra boost he needed to get the work done. When his grades started to improve, his confidence soared! In fact, he took an honors biology class and succeeded! His teacher even made a comment on his report card lauding his work, noting how he’d improved significantly! This is something that Quintin didn’t believe he was capable of. He says that because CIS Wake was there and has guided him through some tough situations, he’s learned to believe in himself!

Then the summer between his junior and senior year, Quintin could be found at the very learning center that has supported him since middle school. He was chosen to be hired as a camp counselor! Quintin also served as a student spokesperson, sharing his story with community leaders about his dream to become a fire chief and an entrepreneur. Today you can find Quintin at Wake Tech Community College, training to be an EMT. He’s well on his way to living his dream! And he’ll tell you that it’s because of CIS Wake and the caring tutors, teachers, and mentors who helped him along the way.
