Luna Dance & Creativity’s mission is to bring creativity, equity and community to every child’s life through dance. For more than three decades, Luna has brought children, artists and arts educators together to move, explore, imagine and create what is possible.
Dance engages the body, mind, imagination, and feeling, opening new ways to know ourselves, understand the world, and connect with others. Through creative practice, we cultivate curiosity, courage, flexibility and the possibility of something new.
Luna believes everyone has the capacity to create and deserves access to the arts. We challenge narrow ideas about who gets to dance, make art and have a voice. By bringing together people of different ages, abilities, cultures and identities, we build community, expand access, and foster belonging. We support artists, educators, families and community partners in reimagining what is possible for children and working together toward a more dynamic cultural life and equitable future.
Luna Dance & Creativity was founded in Berkeley in 1992, during a time of profound loss and upheaval in the Bay Area arts community. Founder Patricia Reedy created Luna in response to two urgent needs: the loss of a generation of dancers to the AIDS epidemic and the displacement of Citicentre Dance Theater after the Loma Prieta earthquake. From these dim origins, Luna was envisioned as an enlightened home for socially conscious dance, a place where artists could create, take risks, connect with community, and imagine a different future.
A cultural hub for children, teens, families, and artists at every stage to explore movement, discover new possibilities, compose dances, and connect. Luna’s intentional progression of learning nourishes the choreographer in every learner, and public programs broaden our ideas of what dance is and who can dance.
Luna equips educators, artists, and professional caregivers with holistic approaches and theoretical perspectives that help every child learn through embodiment. Workshops, coaching, peer exchanges, and shared research refine teaching, nurture collegiality, and advance the field of dance education.
A research-based pedagogy and developmentally appropriate curriculum for young children to initiate a life of learning and caring. Our classes, educator training, curriculum development, and collaborations support curiosity and agency through dance, play, relationships, cultural responsiveness, and creativity.
Through families dancing, parent education, and professional development, Luna supports parents and children navigating separation and other life challenges. MPACT uses joyful, embodied experiences to build trust, deepen connection, inspire communication, and strengthen loving bonds.
Luna partners with schools, districts, and community organizations to expand access to transformational dance education. Through collaborative teaching, professional development, and responsive curricular design, we help make dance an integral and enduring part of every child's learning.
Luna channels the experience, research, and understanding of dance education into broader, bolder change toward a future where every child can learn, create, and thrive. We share our inquiry and discoveries, build alliances, and advocate for creativity, equity, inclusion, and self-determination with the world.
Luna relies on volunteers to make sure our operations are a strong infrastructure for our programs. If you have energy to share, please reach out to us today. You’ll become a valued member of our team!
