OYC Youth Foundation

The purpose of the OYCYF is to financially support individuals and organizations that design, operate, and promote fun and safe activities that support personal leadership and seamanship. Its vision is to operate a year-round program that is fiscally responsive to needs including learning, racing, day sailing, and social events that invite youth to explore the world of sailing and develop leaders and independent sailors who reflect the Corinthian principle and the tradition of yachting.

Oceanside Yacht Club Youth Foundation falls under the Fund Raising & Fund Distribution category: Organizations that raise and distribute funds for multiple organizations within the Youth Development major group area.

The OYCYF was founded in 2017 by a group of local dedicated mariners, yacht club members and parents who wanted to financially support youth sailing and maritime activities that promote leadership, seamanship and a culture that empowers youth to develop skills that last a lifetime.

On The Water Program

We are delighted to report that our funding has provided the Jr. Learn to Sail program at Oceanside Yacht Club with 10 new RS Tera’s and 5 Fj’s for their classes. One of the objectives of this program is to provide for needed maintenance and repair of the boats, as well as upkeep on coach boats, trailers, boat covers, dock boxes, etc.

Thanks to your donation, we will be able to advance this program.

Maritime Adventure Program

The OYCYF Maritime AdventureProgram serves teens, from ages 12 through 18, through camping experiences that feature maritime activities.

Sailing, scuba diving, community service and marine biology adventure camps for teens is what we’re all about.

To that end, some of the camps that we may sponsor include, Catalina Camps, Top Sail, and Outward Bound. Catalina Camps and Top Sail.

Our goal is to make the outdoors accessible to everyone regardless of background, ability or socioeconomic status.

Thanks to your donation, we will be able to advance this program.

Maritime Instruction Program

The OYCYF knows that quality instruction advances juniors’ intellectual, affective and performance skills needed in maritime settings. Quality classroom instruction, which must address safety, integrates fun throughout all learning activities.

Presentations and demonstrations benefit from a wide variety of resources. Examples include:

Instructional and visual aids: magnetic marker boards, projector, computer, posters, videos, boat models, race-timer watches

Books and handouts: Racing Rules of Sailing, sail trim, tactics, Speed Smarts

Special events: regatta and field trip travel, and land-based components of race clinics and new crew training

Instructor development and certification: US Sailing certifications (Levels 1-4), background checks, first aid, CPR, Heads Up concussion training, SafeSport training, boater certification; and instructor development, recruitment and retention

Scholarship Program

We believe the benefits of sailing and maritime education to our youth are many: confidence building through achievement, instilling respect for safety and rules, developing self reliance and responsibility, encouraging teamwork and sportsmanship, and promoting coastal and marine environmental awareness.

It is our hope that any child within the community who has a desire to participate in the sport of sailing will have an opportunity to do so, regardless of whether or not they feel they can afford it. Full and partial scholarship awards are based on number of requests received and needs of the applicant.

Currently our programs include the OYC Junior Learn-to-Sail classroom and on-the-water instruction held at the Oceanside Harbor. Classes are for beginning, intermediate and advanced youth sailors. Scholarships are funded by the Oceanside Yacht Club Youth Foundation.

Volunteering + Events

Catalina Island Camps

Summertime is when we see how children benefit when they unplug from their busy lives. Stepping away from screens, even for a week or two, helps campers connect with new friends and young adult role models. Taking time out from technology helps them discover new strengths in themselves as well as outdoor pursuits that can last a lifetime.
