Oncology And Kids (OAK) is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for children and families impacted by cancer. Through free, year-round programs, including our flagship Camp Reach for the Sky, we provide therapeutic activities, emotional support, and a compassionate community where kids and their families can find joy, healing, and hope. Rooted in the belief that every child deserves the chance to simply be a kid, OAK’s programs foster resilience and connection, supporting participants through diagnosis, treatment, and beyond. By empowering families and creating lifelong bonds, we’re committed to building a supportive, lasting network that meets the emotional and social needs of those affected by pediatric cancer.
At just 4 years old, Kimi Schroder was diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma, a rare and aggressive childhood cancer. Despite the daunting prognosis, Kimi faced her illness with remarkable courage and an unwavering spirit. She endured over eight years of intensive treatments, including high-dose chemotherapy, surgery to remove a softball-sized tumor from her abdomen, stem cell transplants, and radiation therapy. Throughout these challenges, Kimi maintained a positive outlook, often wearing fancy dresses to her chemotherapy sessions to lift her spirits and those around her.
Kimi’s resilience extended beyond her medical battles. She was an active participant in Camp Reach for the Sky, a program by Oncology And Kids (OAK) designed to provide children with cancer a sense of normalcy and joy. At camp, Kimi found a community of peers who understood her journey, allowing her to experience the joys of childhood despite her illness. She loved to sing, dance, swim, and engage in various camp activities, embracing every moment with enthusiasm.
Tragically, after an 8½-year battle, Kimi passed away at the age of 12 in January 2019, in the loving arms of her father, Peter. Her legacy continues to inspire many, highlighting the importance of community support, resilience, and the profound impact of programs like Camp Reach for the Sky in providing joy and comfort to children facing similar battles.
Kimi's story is a testament to the strength and spirit of children battling cancer and underscores the vital role of supportive communities and programs in their lives.
