Students who engage in Learn Fresh programs discover a new way of learning that is fun, highly engaging, and results in academic and social-emotional growth.
Mission: Through community, play, and rigorous exploration, we leverage students' passion for sports and entertainment to inspire their STEM and social emotional learning.
Vision: We envision a world in which our students find learning so engaging that they want to do it all the time.
Focus: Our programs are explicitly focused on achieving equitable representation across the STEM pipeline for girls, students of colors and those living in low-income communities.
“I brought NBA Math Hoops in through the Boys and Girls Club After School Zone. I have seen students who have been shy or unsure of themselves with their math abilities become these phenomenal students and so confident. I have had students move on to become presidents of clubs. The way NBA Math Hoops works, there are never “losers”, there are always “learners”. It builds them up, and I think that is so important, especially with this age group of sixth, seventh, and eighth graders."
- Carmen Sheppard, middle school science teacher, 2018-2019 Teacher of the Year, and NBA Math Hoops Educator.
The NBA Math Hoops program features a comprehensive community program, board game, mobile apps, and classroom curricula that allow students to learn fundamental math and social-emotional skills through the game of basketball.
Initially developed in the classroom of a math educator in Southern California, the program is now implemented in partnership with the NBA, WNBA, NBPA, WNBPA, and a majority of teams across both leagues.
Launched in 2018 through a partnership with the Oakland Athletics, the Math Hits program engages elementary and middle school students in fundamental math and social-emotional development through a comprehensive community program, baseball board game, and curriculum. The program includes a flexible, eight-lesson curriculum that can be implemented within summer camps, after-school programs, and classrooms.
To date, the program has engaged over 10,000 students in the Bay Area and New York City, through partnerships with the New York Mets and Oakland Athletics.
STEM Goals is a new Learn Fresh program that leverages the game of soccer to engage students with STEM and social-emotional learning. This community-based program is built around a simulated soccer game that targets 5th and 6th graders with grade-appropriate, standards-aligned questions across science, technology, engineering, and math disciplines, with a particular focus on sustainability and renewable energy! Students work up and down the field to score goals using player stats, and chance and action cards give students the opportunity to learn more about soccer.
