Black Girls Code (BGC) prepares Black girls and gender-expansive youth to be the next generation of tech creators, innovators, and decision-makers. Our mission is to ensure that Black girls believe they belong in tech and launch them with the skills, opportunities, and resources to lead in Science, Tech, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM).
Our programs are built around three age-specific strategic pillars:
Inspire: Spark a joyful curiosity in Black girls and gender-expansive youth of color, ages 7-18, that transforms into innovation and a lifelong passion for tech.
Educate: Deliver versatile and inclusive in-person and virtual learning that equip BGC learners, aged 7-18, with knowledge and skills to build a foundation for success in tech and beyond.
Launch: Transcend coding proficiency to fuel workforce development and readiness, offering a toolkit of resources, a vibrant network, and confidence for individuals 18 and above to boldly pursue their aspirations and lead in tech.
Impact Story: Ife Joseph has been part of the Black Girls Code community since she was just 9 years old, where she learned to code and launched her first app, Mental Health for Social Justice. Her app helps Black youth process their emotions and access mental health resources.
She has been nominated for Time magazine’s “Kid of the Year” award and spoke at the United Nations “Women Leaders in Media: Making Innovative Technology Work for Women and Girls” conference in 2023.
In February 2025, Ife and her app were featured on Good Morning America.
Code Along is a free video-based coding academy on YouTube that teaches the basics of coding in a fun and engaging way. From Code Along Jr., which teaches block-based coding using Scratch to our youngest learners, to intermediate and advanced content for middle schoolers, high schoolers, college students, and young professionals, Code Along delivers tangible skills-building and inspiration so that Black girls can become the next leaders in tech.
Code Club is a dynamic after-school program designed to launch Black girls and gender-expansive youth in grades 5-12 with coding skills, leadership, and sisterhood to foster their interest in STEAM and tech innovation.
Our Coding Camps offer Black girls and gender-expansive youth an immersive, week-long coding experience that develops essential coding and life skills. Participants learn to use JavaScript or Python to build video games, AI generative apps, art, music, and more. The BGC-curated and culturally relevant curriculum includes community-building sessions, physical activities, and guest speakers to inspire our young coders.
BGC coding workshops are inspiring, hands-on learning sessions that teach real-world coding skills and insights into STEAM career opportunities. These free workshops, both in-person and virtual, help participants explore their curiosity for tech within a supportive community of girls guided by expert tech mentors who reflect their identities. Participants utilize Python, JavaScript, and/or Scratch to implement engaging projects, such as creating a game, webpage, coded song, or digital art. The 2-hour in-person workshops are held on a Saturday every other month in each of our target cities. The two-hour virtual workshops are held every other week and taught by live instructors via Zoom.
BGC’s College & Career programs provide our members ages 18+ with the skills, connections, and real-world experiences needed to succeed and thrive in today’s competitive tech workforce.
