“The mission of the Marie Mills Center is to provide training and support to intellectually and developmentally disabled individuals so they can live and work independently in as normal of a manner as possible, and in a manner that fosters a sense of self-esteem and self-worth.”
Evelyn “Marie” Mills was the daughter of Lewis and Barbara Mills. Marie, a very special person born with a disability, passed away in 1962 at the early age of 13. However, her “specialness” was not because of her disability, it was because of her inspiration. Marie’s family encouraged, taught and supported her in living a full life. She learned to ride a bike, she was a Camp Fire Girl, and she had a pony. She even served tea to President Kennedy when he visited Tillamook in May of 1960.
In many ways, Marie was well ahead of her time. Because of this, she taught others around her that anything was possible if one had desire and support. What Marie inspired in her family and friends during her short time among us is what benefits those with disabilities today.

We love to celebrate integration each year by holding an annual picnic. This event provides opportunities for individuals with disabilities to interact with others at a community event while having fun and enjoying a meal. We are always looking for volunteer for this day-usually in July- for about four hours. This is an opportunity to help others, serve food, man an activity booth or help set up the event and then tear it down. We also seek donations (money, gift cards or merchandise) for this event to use as raffle prizes for activity participation.
This is another fun, integrated, social activity with karaoke, music, dancing and costumes. This is our annual canned food drive for the local food bank. We provide activities to last around 3 hours. Volunteering for this would be for helping decorate the area, take down the decorations, chaperoning the individuals and public that attend, plus, extra help in boxing the donated food.
This celebration is funded through our Recreation/Social Fund. We celebrate each year by having a main dinner that is attended by three separate high school transition classes, county developmental disabilities program individuals, and Marie Mills Center program participants and county wide inclusion for anybody with disabilities.
We reach out to families and team members prior to the event to find interests for gift ideas. We use our funding to procure items for each individual that attends. We buy extras to have on hand because EVERY guest attending receives a gift. Our guest of honor then hands out gifts at the end.
We track individuals that do not have families and make sure they have a 'special' gift to open at their own home.
We are always looking for donations for this event-food items and dinner ware. We also look for many volunteers to help prepare food, decorate, serve and clean up. Our event usually lasts around three hours.
We send out a quarterly newsletter that highlights events we have completed, awards and activities that may be happening.
Feel free to review our current and past newsletters on our website.
